Magnetic Island Photography Community Seasonal Walks
The intention of our Magnetic Island Photography Community seasonal walks is to bring together like-minded people who have a love of nature and photography. We look for interesting subjects to photograph while learning from each other by asking questions and sharing our knowledge. Our walks might include landscape, seascape and wildlife all in one walk or more specific walks for sunset or sunrise photos, fungi hunting or close up photography for example. All that is required is a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to share your knowledge (and of course a camera or phone!).

​​2024
April Photography Walk
Our first photography walk took place on Saturday the 27th of April at 8.30am facilitated by Bruce Hobby. We met at Horseshoe Bay at the carpark opposite the corner of Horseshoe Bay Road and Henry Lawson Street. From there we walked into the lagoon then took the path at the end of Henry Lawson Street through native forest to the Endeavour Creek lagoon. We had 13 enthusiastic photographers for the first 90 minutes, a perfect number to share ideas and skills with. While half our group turned back after that time the other half chose to keep searching for that perfect shot, and learning more about what their phones and cameras could achieve. There were lots of opportunities for people to use their skills and to learn new ones; closeup/macro was very popular, and some people discovered new options on their cameras and phones that they didn't know about! There were many butterflies and other insects that made perfect models for close up photography. Overall, it was a very successful inaugural photography walk, thanks very much to all those who participated!

Horseshoe Bay Sunset Photography Walk
Another fun and informative photography walk took place on Sunday the 26th of May at Horseshoe Bay. Magnetic Island Photography Community committee members Kaspa Blewett, Lawrence Scheele and Bruce Hobby were there to give advice and encouragement, as was local photographer and winner of the Steve Parish Award at the inaugural Magnetic Island Photography Showcase, Beat Lehmann. A total of 27 people enjoyed the walk along the eastern end of the beach, photographing patterns and colours in the sand, sea and sky. Some of these great photos are shown below. Picnic Bay Photography Walk
Our Picnic Bay photography walk took place on Saturday morning, the 13th of July, at Picnic Bay. The group met at the jetty at 8.30am and from there walked along the foreshore, the jetty, the boulders either end and some of the more adventurous participants walked up Tom Thumb for the spectacular views.

Horseshoe Bay Lagoon Photography Walk
Our first photography walk for 2025 took place on Saturday the 22nd March at the Horseshoe Bay Lagoon. With the lagoon looking so beautiful, better than it has for a few years now, it was the perfect time to visit and the rain even held off for a couple of hours for us! Andy Frost who is a long term local and is very passionate about the lagoon very generously joined us and shared his wealth of knowledge about its natural beauty and its importance to the ecology of the area.
The morning was perfectly summed up by one of our top contributors to the Magnetic Island Photography Community, Lyyne VH - “It was such a lovely outing, .......... Andy Frost’s embodied knowledge, connection and passion for this wonderland was inspirational. Thanks for a lovely shared experience to all.”

School Holiday Junior Photography Walk
The weather was perfect for our junior photography walk on Saturday morning April 12. About 12 children and their parents enthusiastically joined in the fun and hopefully the experience will encourage the young ones to take up this constructive and creative pastime.
